people bitching about the usage of “too modern” words in fantasy or historical fiction is sometimes justified, but ultimately I think it’s a waste of time because

  • all words exist within a specific time frame and it’s pointless to avoid the fact that you’re writing with the language of your own time
  • which words are actually “newer” than other words is sometimes wildly unintuitive

according to the dates given in the Oxford English Dictionary, if you wrote a book set in 1897, you could have your characters say “fuckable,” (1889) “sexy” (1896) “uncomfy” (1868) “hellacious” (1847) “dude” (1877) “all righty” (1877) and “heck” (1887), but not “wiggly” (1932) “moronic” (1910) “uptight” (1934) “lowbrow” (1901) “fifty-fifty” (1913) “burp” (1932) “bagel” (1898) or use the word “rewrite” as a noun (1901)

Some more words where the date of their first known usage just Doesn’t Sound Right:

  • hangry, as in the portmanteau of ‘hungry’ and 'angry’ (1912)
  • dildo (1590)
  • yucky (1970)
  • grungy (1965)
  • freebie (1925)
  • shitty (1768)
  • boost (1815)
  • boss (1856)
  • TGIF, as in Thank God It’s Friday (1941)
  • yay (1963)

Fucked up (1863) is much older than fuck you (1943) but older still is the now-obscure fucked out (1862) which means what it sounds like—exhausted from too much sex.

I’ve found the folks into odd fetishes that are not mine are less likely to judge my odd tastes. It’s a chill vibe tbh. Just means you might have to do more work making art/fic to your own tastes.

this exactly. and we can still bond over our shared love for our blorbo and support each other in our respective weirdnesses, something that is not possible (or even desirable) with people whose entire fandom experience is to find things to be outraged over and tear other people down

IME it’s the Vehemently Normal And Wholesome folks who are way more likely to be vicious and cruel both online and in the flesh so yeah weirdos are where it’s at

Hugo Simberg, The Garden of Death, 1896.

Every time I see this I always wonder what the painter’s intended message was. It looks so pleasant, that middle skeleton looks so happy with its work.

Maybe it’s supposed to be a memento mori, but a comforting and encouraging one.

This is one of the most famous paintings in Finland. There are multiple interpretations of it but they all share the same base idea:

“According to Simberg, the flowers represent people’s souls, the skeletons are aids to Death, and the Garden of Death is a purgatory of sorts for souls waiting for entrance into heaven. This artwork invites the viewer to consider the afterlife, to take comfort in his or her own passing, and to not fear what happens after the body fails to function.”

“It depicts Simberg’s thoughts on afterlife, which is not run by angels but skeletons who take care of the heavenly garden with a gentle hand, while waiting for more “gardeners” to arrive. It is derived from the medieval belief that the dead sleep in a blooming garden.”

“In Simberg’s garden the humble Death-like figures struggle against harsh conditions; the landscape around the garden has burnt yellow, it is dry and barren. The cherished flowers grow in exotic shapes, slowly, requiring constant care. The black-clad figures love their nurslings. The garden is a place where Death is allowed to realize its feelings of affection. The Garden of Death can be seen depicting the impossibility of this love; maybe the flowers are tender and fragile because they can not handle the love of Death. Love has two faces: one of them is the face of devastation.”

man what the fuck?

Like I’ve said before they believe the Antichrist will take over the world specifically by creating world peace and paradise so that everyone will trust him as a global dictator. This is why they called Obama the antichrist, because he said he wanted to end war. They believe the world is meant to fall into ruin and anyone planning to end violence or poverty is working for the devil.

We find it extremely funny how apparently the way Transformers writers solved the weird discrepancy between how many male and female Cybertronians there are was to just go. “Hey, they’re an asexual species anyways. What if they’re all born with masc-leaning presentation, but once they came in contact with aliens that have sexual dimorphism, some of them were like ‘Yoooooo girl is an option?????’ and started going by she.” So every femformer is canonically a trans girl now.
